The South East London Wargames Group, or SELWG for short, is a Wargames Club. That means we meet up as a group and play games, usually with a military based theme to them, either; historical, set at any time in history, or, based on a fantasy/sci-fi scenario; set in the future, or past,  like the  imaginary worlds of, Lord of the Rings, The age of Conan, Dan Dare, Doctor Who, and a multitude and myriad of other scenarios, that anyone's mind can conjure up.

So what is Wargaming. We use a number of systems for this purpose:

Figures. Metal or Plastic, to represent objects in real life, or fantasy/sci-fi, men/animals/creatures/aliens, tanks/dragons, ships/space ships,  or planes. These are usually painted and assembled by their owners, and moved over terrain, set out by the players,  using a set of rules to simulate actual combat.

Terrain. These can represent 3 dimensional structures, or natural features, in varying  forms or scales. The most popular being, 25/28mm, 20mm, and 15mm, ie; buildings, hills, trees, rivers, fields, and so on.

Board Games: These usually come as a set package, with most, but not always, as flat pieces of 2 dimensional card,

Role Play: These games involve the player acting out a role within the games structure, like being in a play, with the game acting as the stage. We have had some memorable games using this type of system, Two cowboy games set in a frontier western town, where in the first game the players totally ignored the advancing Mexican army as they were to busy stabbing each other in the back, until it was nearly to late to organize any resistance, and even then, the backstabbing still went on. The second scenario we ran, was a cowboy Cthulhu game, yet again set in a frontier western town, where mad scientists, devious cultists, and  the cream of the undead met our players, again lots of feeding other players to the monsters, to survive.

Re-Enactment: Technically, not done within the club premises, or as a group activity for the club. This is where individual club members join other groups to enact out, and fight battles, in real time. Dressing up in uniforms from many varying periods, from ancient times, right up to the modern day.

Computer Games. Used mainly to assist the players in large/small terrain games, to facilitate in the more complex calculations, ie; a game like, Rob a Bank with a Tank, used the computer to work out the firing damage to the vehicles.

I hope these discriptions have been some help to the non wargamers that come across the site, and apologise to any parents out there, whose children suddenly become interested, hey, it's either us, or a set of drums, think about it.
